The Gold Standard in Player Development

The Spartanburg Viking Football program is far more than an arena for cultivating highly trained and motivated players. Coach Hodge's REFINED Player Development program is a multi-faceted initiative designed to help players develop lifelong success as committed spouses, parents, friends, citizens, employers, and employees. We believe every person was created to change the world for the better. Our mission is to prepare our young people to lead themselves, their families, and others in a positive, proactive, and loving fashion.

As our Vikings proudly wear the gold helmet to represent their school and community, we are mindful that this great honor must be earned. Just as gold itself must undergo a refinement process to enhance its best and most valuable qualities, we are also striving to help one another to become REFINED!

Program Overview

Varsity Football Staff

The staff at Spartanburg High School is one of the most successful collection of high school coaches in the country. Collectively as coaches and players, the Viking staff has won over 50 state championship games at eight different schools. The Viking staff coaches all three teams: Varsity, JV and Freshman Teams. The Viking staff also coaches the 7th and 8th graders four days a week in the summer, as well as works multiple youth clinics over the course of the year.

Head Football Coach

Mark Hodge

Coach Hodge is entering his 15th season as a head coach and fourth as the leader of the Vikings. During the previous 3 seasons the Vikings had a winning season each year, were state semifinalist and quarterfinalist. Coach Hodge came from Chapman HS where he led the Panthers to three state championship appearances, winning two, including a perfect 15-0 season in 2019. During one stretch, Coach Hodge led teams won 48 of 50 ball games. Earning Coach Hodge multiple coach of the year awards, including the 2016 State Coach of the year and South East Regional Coach of the Year. Coach helped lead the North Team (2017 North South Game) and South Carolina (2022 Shrine Bowl) to victory, serving as the defensive coordinator in both games. Coach Hodge also helped Broome win a state championship in 2004 as the defensive coordinator. Coach Hodge has coached multiple NFL players including Deebo Samuel, DJ Jones and DJ Moore.

Gridiron Club

The Spartanburg Viking Gridiron Club is a subgroup of the Spartanburg Viking Booster Club. The main purpose of the subgroup is to organize, mobilize, guide and lead the football parental and community support group. Being the Gridiron Club is a subgroup of the booster club, all bylaws and financial procedures of the booster club govern. All leadership positions and voting members of the subgroup must be booster club members.

Mission: To ensure a high level of expectation and accountability for all those involved, while growing the relationships required to adequately serve our children, program, school and community.

Responsibilities - Help organize, lead or assist in all REFINED operations, 7 on 7s, nutritional and food initiatives: Monday night meals, Wednesday post practice snacks, post game meals, halftime nutrition, service projects and civic engagements, mentorships, internships and part time job opportunities, tutorial services, and general booster club initiatives.
